Human Rights Reporting Project

Last Friday, the Institute of War and Peace Reporting (IWPR) launched its "Human Rights Reporting Project" for the Philippines in a round table discussion in UP Balay Kalinaw.

The discussion, which was not in a round table, was led by my friend Red Batario of the Center for Community Journalism and Development; Inday Varona, editor in chief of Philippine Graphic and NUJP officer; Mrs Edita Burgos, journalist and mom of missing of Jonas Burgos; CHR chair Purisima Quisumbing and of course, IWPR director Alan Davis.

The talks highlighted the need for a more proactive media in terms of human rights reporting. Rarely does human rights issues hit the headline, and when it does, it is often because the situation had already escalated. Indeed, there is a need for media to tackle issues affecting human rights, especially the most basic: food and housing. (see related news item, here)#
